Seeding with Costly Network Information

چکیده

In the presence of contagion, decision makers strategize about where in a network to intervene (e.g., seeding new product). A large literature has developed methods for approximately optimizing choice k seeds cause largest cascade of, example, product adoption. However, it is often impractical measure an entire social network. “Seeding with Costly Network Information,” Eckles, Esfandiari, Mossel, and Rahimian develop analyze algorithms making bounded number queries then selecting seeds. They prove hardness results this problem provide almost tight approximation guarantees their proposed under widely used models contagion. One algorithm practical both querying online networks structuring in-person surveys. This framework further allows reasoning tradeoffs between spending budget on collecting more data versus increasing

Herding with Costly Information

We consider a standard sequential decision to adopt/buy a good in a herding environment. The setup is same as in Sgroi (2002). Contrary to the basic herding case we introduce a cost that the agents have to pay for the information about their predecessors’ actions. All agents receive informative signals as in the standard herding models but do not view the actions taken by their predecessors unl...

Auctions with costly information acquisition1

We consider auction environments in which bidders must incur a cost to learn their valuations and study the optimal selling mechanisms in such environments. These mechanisms specify for each period, as a function of the bids in previous periods, which new potential buyers should be asked to bid. In addition, these mechanisms must induce buyers to both acquire and to reveal truthfully their valu...

Network Seeding

This research studies the optimal seeding of a network of consumers who are potential adopters of a technology. This problem has a wide range of applications which include launching a network good, inducing network-based marketing, igniting collaboration in organizations, and stimulating R&D with local spillovers. I have two main results so far. The first result shows that when a firm is unawar...

Diffusion, Seeding, and the Value of Network Information∗

When communicating information to individuals is costly, policymakers try to identify the best ‘seeds’ to prompt a cascade of information within a social network. Numerous studies have proposed various network-centrality based heuristics to choose initial seeds in a way that is likely to boost diffusion. Here we show that, for a frequently studied diffusion process, randomly seeding s + x indiv...

Optimal voting schemes with costly information acquisition

A group of individuals with identical preferences must make a decision under uncertainty about which decision is best. Before the decision is made, each agent can privately acquire a costly and imperfect signal. We discuss how to design a mechanism for eliciting and aggregating the collected information so as to maximize ex-ante social welfare. We first show that, of all mechanisms, a sequentia...
